Sitting in a chair allows us to sit down without using our back or leg muscles to support ourselves. Fortunately, most of us still find opportunities to walk and stand and maintain our leg muscles. But being raised in a chair-sitting culture allows the muscles required to keep the back straight for long periods of time to atrophy to the point that sitting totally upright for even few minutes - even in a chair - becomes increasingly uncomfortable for most people.
