Exciting news! A bike program at Brown is underway! The day after this is due, the first 5 bicycles for this program will be purchased. It will begin implementation next semester once the weather warms up and will hopefully continue in growth in the coming years. The process for beginning this program has been extensive, but its institution long overdue. We hope you will follow-up on its progress and take advantage of free bike access for all university students. Although we are not able to grant free bikes to every freshman as other Universitites described below do, having accessible bikes will allow for greater mobility and enjoyment of the bike by students.

Many other universities have already implemented programs of various kinds on their campuses with much success. Many schools such as the University of New England and Ripon College have offered free bikes to students who opt to not bring a car to campus. This was a solution posed to a problem of insufficient parking and of course the environmental impact that cars have. A college campus is an ideal place to have a bike, given the accessibility and proximity of a student's basic needs. Middlebury College has free bikes as well-- provided through a different system. Entitled "Yellow Bike Cooperative," this bike system entails bicycles distinctly painted yellow scattered around campus. These bicycles are free for any student to use at any time, so long as it is returned to another bike rack on campus, and have joined the program and received the universal key.
