Pedalpalooza began in 2002 as Bike Summer and was continued due to its huge success. This is an event lasting over two weeks in Portland comprised of over 200 different activities for all types and ages 1 to 100. Events include a birding bike ride, bike jousting, a cycling circus, bike parade, pedal potluck, midnight zoo ride and much more. This more extensive project incorporates many different aspects and uses of the bicycle and appeals to many different social groups. The support in both planning and attendance of the event is due to the large cycling culture in Portland. The design of the city is very supportive of the bicycle and therefore the local government is willing to fund such a large-scale event. These events also help add to the wide spread use of the bicycle in Portland by the message it send to community members. It introduces people to their neighbors who also support bicycle use, enlightens attendees about various uses of the bicycle and develops a stronger community of people who are willing to incorporate the bike into their daily lives. This event also changes the use of public space, which is one the major themes of the bicycle. Even in effects on community design and infrastructure, riders feel they have a right to affect the use of public space.
