A Reminder of the Psychological Implications
The mechanical Turk was a great ploy to trick people into a feeling that chess would become the battleground for humans vs. machines. However, the Turk lost a lot and people considered it an interesting toy - not something to destroy human intelligence all together.
70's computer chess made huge advancements in algorithmic thinking. However, what is missing here is the memory to store and randomly access endgames or scenarios. Data = knowledge = power
IBM's Deep Blue, which famously tied and then beat Garry Kasparov. There are two advancements here - 1) machine learning's ability to optimize subsequent games and 2) a man-on-the-moon type initiative whereby a poor chessplayer (aka programmer) is a cyborg opponent. Consider that IBM won after playing with the code. I wonder where?
