Ouija boards are often advertised with young females as a target audience. The Ouija board allows for a diversion from teenage life and gives the user a sense of rebellion. Secret messages and intimate communiques have become a rite of rebellion. Ouija circles tend to spring up in college dormitories, often with young women at their helm. These women are claimed to be unconsciously reprising the role of spirit medium that women had held in the nineteenth century. The Ouija claims to be a way for young women to work through their fears. (Horrowitz, 74)
Ouija board advertisements often grab young girls by playing with their hormones. By claiming that boys are the best Ouija partner, or that Ouija is "even better with a boy" the advertisements play to young girls want for love and marriage.
