Spiritualism is the only religion that approves of the Ouija board. (Hunt, 109) Spiritualism is the belief that spirits and the dead can and do communicate with the living. (Horowitz, 71) The movement began in 1848 with the use of the Ouija board in New York. Two sisters found that they were able to communicate with the dead and began to spread their method through a “society of spiritualists”. By the 1870's there were an estimated eight million spiritualists in the United States, and the movement has grown since then. (Hunt, 110)
