ARCHAEOLOGY & FILM

Over the past 2 1/2 years filmmaker Lee Fearnside (MA, RISD) has been filming the GFAP archaeologists at work as part of her film documentary entitled "Telling Stories". The film aims to examine how archaeologists create knowledge and information through excavation, recording, and analyses. "Telling Stories" is a work in progress and will be shared by Lee with the public when completed in 2008. Click the link for more about: "Telling Stories".

Recently, at the CHAT 2006 conference in Bristol, Lee and Krysta co-presented a rough cut of "Telling Stories" coupled with a self-evaluative reaction from a dozen current and former project archaeologists. For a summary of the presentation, click here.

The GFAP archaeologists reaction to the film was especially interesting. Their reactions varied for many reasons, from the personal to aspects of the presentation, but all were impressed with the film's visual aesthetic. The most important part of the experience of being filmed is what we, as archaeologists, can learn from viewing all of our work through the lens of a non-archaeologist. In response to the film, we have conducted a survey of crew members and are now exploring how the results create a healthy and hybrid creative working space, stimulating the growth of projects that involve archaeologists and non-archaeologists. The surveys of the archaeologists are posted here, followed by an additional interpretive analysis of our experiences with the film: "Telling Stories" Questionnaires
