Data Science Working Group

Data Science and bioinformatics research in cancer combine systems biology, computational statistics, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), and software engineering to generate new insights about epidemiologic and genetic causes of cancer and to advance Cloud Computing infrastructure for Precision Medicine.

The purpose of the Data Science working group at Legorreta Cancer Center (LCC) at Brown University and affiliated Health Systems Lifespan and Care New England is to identify and pursue opportunities for innovative data-driven research in cancer and to serve as a shared resource of data science expertise for cancer-related research.

The Data Science working group aims to connect researchers and clinicians in cancer with those in data science fields including informatics, computer science, biostatistics, ML/AI, and computational biology, foster interdisciplinary collaboration within and beyond LCC, and demonstrate impact on policy at the State and National levels in a rapidly evolving area that has an impact on the cancer burden in Rhode Island.

The working group also will establish a dedicated Data Science resource at LCC designed to support the cancer research enterprise at Brown, Lifespan, and Care New England.

The planned key activities include coordinating the collection, analysis, storage, and distribution of cancer patient genomics/bioinformatics datasets and associated clinical data as well as patient and family cancer history and lifestyle factors, under protocols approved by the Institutional Review Board, and developing infrastructure and methods to assure optimal data collection and bioinformatics, ML/AI capabilities.

Goals

To support LCC at Brown University, and the affiliated Health Systems Lifespan and Care New England in the state of RI and beyond to reduce cancer risk by utilizing and developing innovative and leading-edge methods in bioinformatics, computing, statistics, ML, and AI to investigate epidemiologic and genetic causes of cancer.
