Shiyoko CothrenShiyoko Cothren, MHA, FACHE, will be joining the Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University as its inaugural associate director of administration beginning August 1, 2022.

Shiyoko is coming to Brown from the Penn State Cancer Institute at Penn State Health, where she has been the director of operations and associate director for administration since 2013. In this role, Shiyoko provided strategic planning, management, and administrative oversight for research and clinical activities and helped develop a five-year strategic plan toward achieving National Cancer Institute designation. Prior to that, Shiyoko served as the operations director for the departments of radiation oncology and psychiatry at Penn State Health, and held a similar role in its neurology and neurosciences institute. She began her career in health care administration at Wayne State University in Detroit as the director of business operations and interim chief operating officer for psychiatry and behavioral medicine. 

Shiyoko holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from American University and a master of healthcare administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She is a fellow of the Academy of Healthcare Executives and a senior instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Penn State University College of Medicine.

As the associate director of administration for the Legorreta Cancer Center, Shiyoko will oversee strategic directives and initiatives for the center. Working with its leadership, Shiyoko will help foster an environment of collaboration and interaction for cancer center members across departmental, school, and institutional boundaries. She will be instrumental in ensuring that all activities continue to meet National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant guidelines in order to achieve and maintain a federal comprehensive cancer center designation.
