January 9, 2019
Attention all Graduate Students:
If you are planning on completing your degree requirements this May 26, 2019, whether it be a transitional masters degree and/or a terminal masters or Doctor of Philosophy, you must complete an official Application to Graduate. If you do not file an official Application to Graduate by end of day Wednesday, May 1, 2019 you will not be placed on the commencement list and a diploma will not be ordered in your name.
The Application to Graduate is available in Banner Self Service. Simply log into the secure area; select the Student Records menu; and select the Apply to Graduate link. Once there you will be presented with the program currently stored on your student record. As a reminder ONLY select the curriculum/program that you intend to receive a diploma for at this May 2019 commencement.
If you are a PhD candidate and are intending to complete a transitional masters and it is not reflected in Banner web, DO NOT simply select your PhD curriculum especially if you are not intending to complete the PhD as well this May. Simply notify the Student Records Division in the Office of the Registrar via [email protected] with your Name, Banner ID, Department and Degree and the masters program can be added to your record which, once updated, will then allow you to log in and apply using the appropriate program.
Please note that PhD candidates getting only a transitional master's will participate in the ceremony for master's students.
The on-line Application to Graduate will not only place you onto the 2019 Commencement list, it also allows you to indicate your name as you would like it to appear on your diploma.
Please note, the University does not allow the addition of professional credentials, such as MD, Esq., etc. appended to any part of your name on the diploma. Furthermore, the name you provide will be what appears in the Official Commencement Bulletin and therefore should be somewhat consistent with the official name as recorded in the student system.
The Application to Graduate also allows you to indicate how your name should be pronounced at the Graduate School Commencement ceremony, and to specify a viable diploma mailing address post-commencement should you not be able to attend the Graduate School Commencement ceremony on May 26, 2019,
While the Application to Graduate is necessary for all degree recipients, it is only one step of the required commencement process. Please also complete the Awards Form to list any awards and honors you have received while a student at Brown to be included in the Commencement Bulletin. You should also Rent or Purchase Academic Regalia with the Brown Bookstore by April 15 to avoid late fees. All those participating in the Commencement procession and Graduate School Ceremony must wear academic regalia. Master's and PhD candidates need a gown, cap or tam, and a hood. For further information, please visit the Commencement website.
