Didactic Education

PEM Fellows attend weekly didactic conferences on core pediatric emergency medicine topics. PEM Faculty conducts a summer lecture series on core competencies such as trauma and cervical spine injuries, rapid sequence intubation, suturing, and orthopedic injuries.

In the ‘Meet the Expert’ series, guest speakers from subspecialty services are invited to discuss updates and best practice guidelines in their field as it pertains to pediatric emergency medicine.

Sessions on ‘Ethics in the ED’ and Morbidity & Mortality are held quarterly. Fellows are paired with PEM Faculty to lead Journal Club discussions on articles of their choice.

A mainstay of the didactic curriculum are simulation sessions, which are held at The Simulation Center.  Cases emphasize leadership training, medical management, and procedures.

Unique to this program is the ‘Future Faculty Development’ series, which focuses on topics such as building a curriculum vita for the academic or community emergency physician, and contract negotiation. Adult learning theory is integrated into the curriculum, including instruction on how to give feedback and ‘the 5 minute preceptor’.

Fellows have an opportunity to earn degrees as a Master of Public Health or Master in Clinical and Translational Research at the Brown University School of Public Health. Tuition is supported by the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Beyond core didactic sessions, PEM Fellows obtain ATLS and PALS instructor certification.
