Philip Gruppuso
Associate Dean for Medical Education
Dr. Philip A. Gruppuso, M.D. is currently Professor of Pediatrics, Professor of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry (Research) and Associate Dean for Medical Education at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
An undergraduate of Union College in Schenectady, NY (Fine Arts/Music) and the recipient of a medical degree from the University of Rochester, Dr. Gruppuso went on to complete his residency training in pediatrics at the Brown program of the Rhode Island Hospital. He subsequently completed training in the subspecialty of pediatric endocrinology. Following sequential postdoctoral training stints at Brown University with Drs. Robert Schwartz in the Division of Pediatric Metabolism and David L. Brautigan in the Section of Biochemistry, Dr. Gruppuso became the first director of the joint Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at Brown and the Rhode Island Hospital in 1987.
Dr. Gruppuso has been a lecturer and course director for medical biochemistry since 1989. In addition, Dr. Gruppuso has been involved in graduate education for more than fifteen years during which time he has served as primary advisor to seven Ph.D. students, as a trainer for two of Brown’s biomedical graduate programs and as the director of Brown’s M.D./Ph.D. program. In addition, Dr. Gruppuso also directed a clinical elective in Pediatric Endocrinology for more than fifteen years and was the Director of the Pediatric Endocrinology fellowship training program at Brown from 1994 to 2003.
The recipient of an NIH Special Emphasis Research Career Award and the beneficiary of continuous NIH funding since 1989, Dr. Gruppuso’s research has focused on basic mechanisms that control both normal and abnormal cellular growth. He is the author of over one hundred original research articles, review articles and textbook chapters.
Through his years in academic medicine, Dr. Gruppuso has maintained his interest in music as an active jazz and blues pianist in and around Providence, RI. The father of twin daughters, both art school graduates, Dr. Gruppuso is a resident of Seekonk, MA. He has been married to Martha Manno, a writer and publisher of fiction and poetry, since 1974.
