Brown SRP in partnership with the Mystic Aquarium, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Society, and the Narragansett Indian Tribe (NIT) hosted a full-day event on August 10th at the Ninigret ponds in southern Rhode Island. Brown SRP participants: back row left to right: Scott Frickel (CEC co-leader), trainees Willis Bilderback, Vidushi Shukla, Deisy Fernandes; Summer Gonsalves (CEC co-leader) Robert Hurt (director).
This educational outreach activity for tribal youth focused on the geology, flora, fauna, and environmental challenges on these historic Narragansett lands. The group conducted field measurements and seine netting in the salt ponds and heard diverse perspectives on land issues from NIT tribal leaders, Brown and Mystic Aquarium scientific staff, and guests from the neighboring Shinnecock Indian Nation on Long Island, the Wiquapaug Eastern Pequot Indian Tribe, and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Cape Cod.
