This is Brown’s first year as a member of the QuestBridge College Match Program, and we are delighted to be part of this very successful and worthy program. We hope the FAQs below are helpful to you in answering questions you may have about Brown and about QuestBridge. If you need additional information, please e-mail us or call us at 401-863-2378.
Is the QuestBridge Match at Brown binding?
Yes. If you are admitted to Brown under the Match Program, we expect that you will withdraw all applications to other colleges or universities.
What materials, in addition to my QuestBridge application, do I have to submit to Brown by the November 2nd deadline in order for my application to be considered complete?
- Official high school transcript.
- Official scores for EITHER the SATs (including two Subject Tests) OR the ACT (with Writing).
- The following Financial Aid documents should be submitted by fax to The Brown University Office of Financial Aid at (401) 863-7575. Please write your full name, and “QuestBridge” on all pages.
- QuestBridge Cover Sheet for Financial Documents to Brown
- Your parents’ 2008 Federal Income Tax Return (signed, with all schedules, attachments, W-2s, and other earnings statements). Include personal and corporate/partnership tax returns, if applicable. (If your parents are not together, your non-custodial parent should also submit his/her tax return, W-2s, and a copy of the Noncustodial Parent PROFILE - available on the CSS Profile link below.)
- You must also submit electronically the 2010-2011 CSS PROFILE Application
What if my parents did not file a 2008 Federal Tax Return?
If your parents were not required to file a 2008 Federal Tax Return, please have them complete the 2009-2010 Parent Non-Filer Statement and fax it to the Office of Financial Aid at (401) 863-7575. Please write your full name, and “QuestBridge” on the form.
Can I be admitted to Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) as part of the Match program?
No. The first round of admission to the PLME will occur in mid-December, after the conclusion of the Match process. If you are matched with Brown, we will contact you to determine if you have an interest in being considered for the PLME, and provide you with instructions on how to enter that application process.
Students who apply in Brown’s Regular or Early Decision cycles can choose to apply to the Program in Liberal Medical Education by completing the appropriate section of Brown’s Supplement to the Common Application.
Can I apply to Brown through the College Match program if I am not a US citizen?
Yes. We will consider all applicants regardless of citizenship.
How can I have my application fee waived?
There is no fee to apply to the College Match process for QuestBridge Finalists. If QuestBridge Finalists do not match with Brown, but would like to apply to Brown through Regular Decision, we will waive the application fee of $75, provided students indicate their QuestBridge finalist status on both the Common Application and the Brown Supplement to the Common Application. Students can do so by going to the ‘Payments’ tab, clicking on ‘Fee Waiver Request,’ and selecting ‘Other.’ Then on the Brown Supplement, enter “QuestBridge Finalist” as an explanation for requesting a fee waiver. You do not need to submit any additional paperwork.
QuestBridge Non-Finalists may still qualify for the fee waiver by request.
Will I be interviewed as part of the Match process?
Due to the shortened timeframe of the Match process, we will be able to offer only a limited number of interviews to students in their home regions. All interviews are conducted by Brown graduates. If we are able to interview you, we will contact you directly -- you do not need to contact us to set up an interview. Students who apply in our Early Decision or Regular Decision processes will go through our usual interview cycle, and will be contacted directly by a Brown alumnus/a in their home regions.
How will I be notified if I match with Brown?
QuestBridge will contact you directly on December 1 if you have been matched with Brown. We will contact you shortly thereafter with an official letter of admission and your financial aid award.
If I am a College Match finalist and do not match with Brown, can I still apply through the Regular Decision process?
If you do not match with Brown as a finalist, or you match with a school that has a non-binding admission offer and you remain interested in Brown, we strongly encourage you to apply to Brown in our Regular Decision process, which has a January 1 deadline. As part of your Regular Decision application we will ask that you complete the Common Application and Brown Supplement, as well as provide official transcripts, test scores, and teacher and counselor recommendations. You may use your QuestBridge application essays on the Common Application and Supplement. Please note that if you successfully match with a school that has a binding admission offer, you are not eligible for consideration in Brown’s Regular Decision process. It is important to check with your match school to be sure you understand the terms of your match.
If I am not named a finalist in the College Match Program, may I apply to Brown?
Yes. You have two options for applying to Brown if you are not named a finalist in the College Match process. You may choose to apply under our Early Decision program, which has an application deadline of November 1. You may also choose to apply under our Regular Decision program, which has an application deadline of January 1. For either of our Early or Regular Application plans, we ask that you follow our usual application guidelines and submit the Common Application and the Brown Supplement to the Common Application. The QuestBridge application cannot be substituted for the Common Application for non-finalists who apply through our Early or Regular Decision programs.
Are my chances of getting into Brown different depending on whether I apply through the Match process or in a Regular or Early Decision process?
Every application we receive is thoroughly examined and evaluated for potential academic achievement at Brown and for non-academic impact on the Brown community. We treat each applicant individually, and select students who will be successful at Brown, regardless of when, or in which admission cycle, they apply. It is important to note that each year the Board of Admission is thoroughly inspired by the many dimensions of excellence that our applicants present; however, due to the sheer volume of applications, we cannot admit all of the qualified students who apply. The most important actions that you may take on your own behalf are to research your colleges well and to produce a thoughtful application.
Will I still receive financial aid if I do not match with Brown in the College Match process but am admitted later in the Regular Decision process?
Brown meets the demonstrated financial need for all admitted students – regardless of whether they apply through the College Match process or through Early Decision or Regular Decision. We recently implemented a series of financial aid initiatives that make a Brown education very affordable and accessible for low and middle income families, and allow students to graduate with no or minimal loan debt.
For more information about Brown’s financial aid policies, please visit the Financial Aid Office website.
How many students will be matched with Brown?
Since this is Brown’s first year as a QuestBridge College Match partner, we are not able to predict the number of students who will be matched with the University.
Does Brown fund students' travel to visit the campus in the fall?
Brown does not fund travel for prospective applicants. However, we welcome students to visit overnight, attend information sessions, and take a campus tour whenever they can.
In particular, we invite students to attend our Fall Open House for minority students on Saturday, October 24 (contact us for details).
