Resumed Undergraduate Education

Each year, a small number of students who have been out of high school for six years or more but who have not yet completed a four-year bachelor’s degree are admitted to Brown through the Resumed Undergraduate Education Program (RUE).  The reasons for the non-completion of their formal study vary widely.  Some candidates have taken time to pursue a career or public service.  Others have experienced life events that necessitated a postponement of study.  Brown is able to welcome some of those individuals who now have the desire and opportunity to complete a college degree.  Depending on how much transfer credit they present from their previous institution(s), RUE students begin their study at Brown at points anywhere from semester one to semester five.  Because RUE students often have full-time jobs or family obligations, they may be granted permission to study part-time at Brown and live off-campus.

Students apply for admission to the RUE Program when they apply for admission to the University.  Students are accepted into the program only at the time of admission; Brown students admitted as first-year or transfer applicants do not qualify for the program.

Admitted RUE students participate in the standard orientation activities for incoming students along with special sessions that address RUE student needs.  Each RUE student is assigned an academic advisor who assists them in constructing a course of study that will lead to degree completion.  Throughout the academic year, the Dean of the College sponsors gatherings that enable RUE students to meet current and incoming RUE students and to consult with academic deans and other administrative staff.
