Study Away in the USA

Brown students sometimes choose to study at other U.S. colleges or universities while remaining degree-seeking candidates at Brown.  Students may petition to transfer the credits they earn at these institutions to Brown with approval of the appropriate academic departments and the Committee on Academic Standing.  One of the academic deans approves petitions for programs that have been acceptable in the past and that continue to maintain academic quality consistent with Brown's standards.

Before leaving for study away

Students who wish to study away should first read Study Away in the USA FAQs which answers most questions students have about study away.  Students may also visit the Curricular Resource Center to gather information on institutions and programs from which Brown accepts transfer credit.

All students considering study away are urged to consult with a faculty advisor, concentration advisor, and/or academic dean to discuss the impact studying away will have on their progress toward fulfilling Brown's course and enrollment requirements.  Academic departments determine whether or not transfer credit courses meet concentration requirements.  Students must obtain required preliminary or retroactive approvals from faculty members in the appropriate departments for the courses they wish to transfer.  Before they leave for study away, students must file a leave of absence from with one of the deans in the Dean of the College Office.

Upon returning to Brown

Once they return from study away, students submit an official transcript documenting credits and grades earned, along with the required departmental approvals, to the Study Away dean, who will present the transfer petition at the next Committee on Academic Standing meeting.  Students should make copies of all forms they submit for study away credit.

Students may receive up to eight course credits for work undertaken elsewhere during an academic year.  Credit cannot be granted until the student has successfully completed the coursework and submitted an official transcript documenting the courses and the grades earned.  Brown does not charge a fee to process credits from study at another institution in the U.S.
