Curricular Development Awards
Brown sponsors a number of internal grant programs that fund innovative course development. Grant programs sponsored by the Dean of the College Office, the Creative Arts Council, and the Office of International Affairs fund new course development, team-teaching initiatives, and improvements to existing courses.
Grant programs that support undergraduate course development are listed below. All regular members of the Brown faculty are encouraged to apply.
Writing Courses
(up to $4000, Deadline: Feb 10)
These grants support the design of new courses in which students draft and revise writing assignments based on feedback about their prose. Smaller grants are available to redesign existing courses to meet the criteria for the College’s new W course designation. Proposals for upper-level concentration courses are especially welcome. For more information and to apply online, go to www.brown.edu/college/faculty.
Innovative Science Courses
(up to $2500, Deadline: Feb 10)
The Wayland Collegium and Brown’s new Science Center are soliciting proposals for innovative introductory science courses to be taught in 2010-2011. Courses can be for potential science concentrators as well as students with a general interest in science. First-year seminars and interdisciplinary courses are especially welcome. For more information and to apply online, visit www.brown.edu/college/faculty.
International Education
(up to $4000, rolling deadline)
Brown’s Office of International Affairs awards grants to faculty developing new courses or revising existing ones by inviting guest speakers or developing other initiatives that bring an internationalized perspective to a subject. Contact Matthew_Gutmann@brown.edu.
Creative Arts Courses
(up to $3000, Deadline: Feb 10)
Brown’s Creative Arts Council supports the development of new interdisciplinary or intermedial courses that promote collaborations among artists, scientists, and humanists and that cross boundaries of individual arts disciplines. Funds may be used for course materials, student assistance, travel, or research needs. Contact Chira_DelSesto@brown.edu.
Community-Based Courses and Research
(up to $4000 for courses and $10,000 for research, rolling deadline)
The Swearer Center for Public Service funds the development of courses that integrate public or community work with classroom learning and research. Faculty may propose new courses, update existing courses, or design research that advances scholarship. Funds cover summer salary, material support, or student assistance. Contact Kerrissa_Heffernan@brown.edu.
Undergraduate Teaching and Research
(up to $3000, Deadline: Feb 10)
Undergraduate Teaching and Research Awards (UTRAs) fund student assistance with course development and redesign during the summer ($3000) or the semester ($1000). Preference is given to projects that clearly set forth the perspectives and contributions of both the student and the faculty member in the curricular revision process. More information is at www.brown.edu/college/ut
Summer Courses
(up to $4000, Deadline: March 5)
These grants support the development of new and innovative courses taught through Summer and Continuing Studies. Courses may be offered during Summer Session (as credit-bearing or three-week non-credit courses), in a credit-bearing certificate program, or as a Continuing Studies non-credit course. Proposals for courses using new or distributive learning technology are encouraged.

Course Enhancement
(up to $500, rolling deadline)
Salomon Grants support the integration of innovative learning activities into an existing course. Funds have been used to bring guest speakers to class, to finance class field trips, and to purchase research or demonstration materials for a course. Apply online at http://brown.edu/college/webapps/faculty_grants.
N.B.: Because Salomon grants are small, we expect that your department will initially handle the reimbursement of your expenses. After your class activity has been completed, the Dean of the College will then credit your department's account.
