Engaging the Global Community

The challenges shared by societies in the new millennium are global and interdisciplinary. So too are the solutions.

As Brown seeks to prepare students to assume leadership roles in the 21st century, it has long realized that it is not enough to acquire a textbook knowledge of other peoples, other cultures, and other ways of thinking.

The imperatives for global education demand that students expand their personal “sense of place” by exposing themselves to other value systems, other modes of expression and other approaches to resolving shared problems that transcend national borders.

As part of its academic mission, Brown University offers undergraduate students the opportunity to study abroad through a wide variety of academic programs, some offered directly by the University and others sponsored by institutions which Brown approves for academic credit. Well over 500 Brown students study outside of the United States each year and are transformed by their experiences in the most positive and profound ways.

Our students can be found in classrooms, research and field stations throughout the globe. By going abroad they expose themselves to challenges that significantly hone their ability to work in diverse environments, to accommodate “difference,” and to adjust quickly to unexpected changes.

Returning students display an emotional resilience that allows them to perform under pressure, an increased flexibility and a willingness to adapt.

In short, they acquire the global competencies that will serve them well in life regardless of the path they may choose to follow or – in the adventurous spirit exemplified by so many Brown students – forge.

We invite you to consider the vast array of study abroad options that are available to you here at Brown. Our experienced staff will assist you in navigating the selection and application process and will work with you throughout the study abroad cycle.

Like the thousands of Brown alumni who have incorporated an international dimension into their four year study plan through a study abroad experience, your view of the world will be transformed – redefined – in the most profound and positive of ways.
