Experience

Before coming to Brown, Maureen worked for several years teaching in Washington, DC, in a public and public charter school. After completing her graduate work at Harvard University, she worked for The New Teacher Project and Mercy College in New York City where she helped create a graduate-level teacher education curriculum for New York City Teaching Fellows who were receiving a special education certificate and an English language learner endorsement. She also developed a Resident Teacher program at the charter school in which she taught which enabled new teachers to learn the craft of teaching while working closely with veteran teachers, getting a Masters Degree in Education from American University, and partaking in customized in-house professional development on a weekly basis. Professor Sigler has also presented research on the effect of teacher expectations on the academic achievement of students in an urban vocational high school at the 2003 Student Research Conference and International Forum at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and has conducted various professional development workshops to her colleagues in the schools in which she taught on the following topics: developing effective communication with families of special education students, differentiating instruction, and using student work analysis protocols to assess student understanding.
