Department of French Studies

The Department of French Studies at Brown is devoted to exploring French and Francophone cultures. At the undergraduate level we offer instruction in the language, literatures and cultures of  the French-speaking world, and at the graduate level we train students to become effective teachers and scholars.

Our faculty members represent a broad range of expertise in language pedagogy, literary criticism, cultural studies, film studies, and critical theory.  Our courses are taught in French, and the development of fluency in the language is an important goal. At the same time, we seek to prepare students to understand and confront the challenges they face as citizens of the world in the twenty-first century.
