It Takes a (Diverse) Community

Biodiversity enhances productivity much more in natural systems than it does in artificial experiments, according to research recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) by ECI director Osvaldo Sala and postdoctoral researcher Pedro Flombaum.

Engineering The Earth: A Public Forum on Controlling the Climate

Professor Brad Marston organized this public forum in association with the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics conference on the Physics of Climate Change. Since it's happening this weekend, in Santa Barbara, most ECI-ers won't be attending in person, but presentations will be available on the conference web site within a few days.

Environmental Change Initiative

The nature of environmental problems requires a broad interdisciplinary approach that brings together scientists and students from the physical, life and social sciences as well as the public policy arena. Brown’s Environmental Change Initiative fosters interdisciplinary collaborations across the campus and with colleagues around the world.

Urgent environmental problems occur at all scales from local to global. By integrating and relaying information between specialists, ECI builds relationships that cross scales.

Solving environmental problems not only requires creating new knowledge but also effectively communicating problems and solutions to various stake holders, from everyday citizens to elected officials. ECI helps researchers communicate specialized knowledge toward effective solutions.
