Residential Council Minutes :: November 14, 2006

Present: Adam Axler, Alex Dean, Peter Donnelly, Mark Fuller, Justin Glavis-Bloom, Thea Hinkle, Allison Kwong, Katie Lamm, Damian Maldonado, Michael Morgenstern, James Reed, Evan Stone, Chris Sunu, Laura Supkoff

Absent: Jimmy Kaplowitz, Sri Kalyanaraman (absence excused on Nov 07, 2006)

Guests: Dean Forsberg, Chad Mank, Rich Bova, Maria Duarte

  1. i. Presentation: Undergraduate Housing at Brown
    1. a. Where do students live off-campus? Mostly south of George St.
    2. b. About 20% of students each year live off-campus, trend seems to be more juniors going off-campus, fewer seniors
    3. c. Invest in more undergraduate housing: educational benefits of residential community. health & safety, community relations
    4. d. Goal: to house 90% of undergraduates in residence by adding more housing for upperclassmen
    5. e. Alice Cook House model in Cornell building self-contained spaces for upperclassmen with programming
    6. f. Ideally: 4-person apartments
  2. ii. Do we think this is a good idea?
    1. a. Suggestions: interspersing singles on different floors, adding singles on the same floor as suites, splitting up types of rooms by building
    2. b. The suite fee will not change ($1000/year), which is comparable to other universities.
    3. c. Should we be concentrating on maintaining current housing conditions instead of building new housing?
  3. iii. Program Housing
    1. a. Clarifying the definition and punishments for warning vs. failure
