Visits 2010-2011

Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, Professor Michael Marsh, Vice-Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Trinity College Dublin, visited Brown University on August 30, 2011. During his visit, Prof. Marsh met with various administrators on campus to discuss Trinity College’s possible inclusion in the Brown Plus One International Program.  

The Chinese University of Hong Kong made two trips to Brown in August. Each visit advanced Brown and CUHK’s expansive relationship. In the latter visit, CUHK President Joseph J.Y. Sung and his delegation joined President Ruth Simmons and Vice President for International Affairs Matthew Gutmann for a signing ceremony. Three memoranda of understanding were signed including the Brown Plus One, Brown Global Forums and the Brown-CUHK Language Teaching Fellowship.More…

Shanghai University of Electric Power, China, A delegation from Shanghai came to Brown on June 9, 2011 to meet with the Office of International Programs, International Affairs, Department of Engineering and Continuing Studies.

University of Liberia, Liberia, President Emmet A. Dennis and Secretary of the Trustees of Donations for Education in Liberia, Mr. John B. Newhall, participated in meetings with President Simmons, International Affairs, the Taubman Center for Public Policy and the Department of Africana Studies to explore areas of mutual interest between the University of Liberia and Brown University.

Zhejiang University, China, A five-member delegation from Zhejiang’s Faculty of Information Technology came to Providence May 18th through the 20th to participate in 3 full days of meetings with Brown’s Biology and Medicine, Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science Departments. The visit also explored creating a multilateral partnership between the two universities.

Instituto de Empresa Business School, Spain, On May 4, 2011, the President of the International Center for Entrepreneurial Management visited Brown to discuss the launch of IE’s Business Ideas Contest and a scholarship opportunity that would offer students waived tuition at one of IE’s Masters programs.

University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Loyiso Nongxa visited Brown on February 4, 2011 as part of his annual tour of top US universities; he met with representatives of the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics and the Brown International Advanced Research Institute (BIARI) and toured Brown's Population Studies and Training Center.

Unicamp, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil, Professor Philippe Devloo, School of Engineering, met with colleagues in the Engineering Department on January 31, 2011 to discuss common research interests.

The University of Exeter, England, Professor Nick Kaye, Dean of the College of Humanities, visited Brown on January 26, 2011 and met with chairs and faculty in several departments to discuss the possibility of future collaborations in the arts and humanities. Dr. John Withrington, Director of International Office, made a follow-up visit on May 27, 2011. 

Chinese University of Hong Kong, China, Gordon Cheung, Director of CUHK’s Office of Academic Links, visited Brown December 13-14, 2010, meeting with faculty and administrators to develop a variety of initiatives including undergraduate, graduate, and faculty exchange.

L’Institut des Ameriques, France, On December 8-9, 2010, Dr. Marie Mercat-Bruns, from Sciences Po and the IDA, met with Brown faculty from a range of departments to discuss plans for implementing Brown as an IDA poll institution.

Seoul National University, South Korea, SNU made a quick visit to Brown on November 9, 2010 to discuss with the Director of International Initiatives a range of collaborative and exchange possibilities, including summer fellowship opportunities.

University of Cantabria, Spain, On November 5, 2010 a delegation representing the University of Cantabria's International Programs and Engineering, visited Providence to meet with their counterparts at Brown. 

The Global Education & Leadership Foundation, India, On November 1, 2010, CEO Gowri Ishwaran, met with Brown educators in regard to established leadership programs in India and Brown University’s summer Leadership Institute.

Singapore Public Service Commission, Singapore, On October 26, 2010, a delegation from Singapore’s PSC met with students and faculty members to discuss scholarship opportunities for Singaporean students.

African Leadership Academy, South Africa, The Founder and CEO of the African Leadership Academy met with President Simmons and Brown faculty members on October 14, 2010 in regard to admissions of ALA students into Brown.

Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay, India, On October 5, 2010, Director Devang Khakhar met with President Simmons, and together they signed an agreement initiating an undergraduate exchange program between Brown and IIT-Bombay
