Reviews the discoveries and related scholarship of ancient synagogues, churches, and mosques in ancient Palestine. Focuses on their architectural and decorational as well as their spiritual and religious characteristics, and examines how those institutions influenced each other throughout their history of development. This course will review the discoveries and related scholarship of ancient synagogues, churches and mosques in ancient Palestine. It will focus on their architecture and decoration, as well as their spiritual and religious characteristics, and examine how those institutions influenced each other throughout their history of development.
- Assignments and Grading
- During each meeting there will be a lecture on a selected topic. The lectures will be illustrated with PowerPoint presentations. Short oral presentations by the students and discussions will follow each lecture. Participation in two fieldtrips to a local synagogue, mosque and church will be mandatory. In addition students will be required to write a final term paper (10 pages for undergraduates, 20 pages for graduates) presented at the end of the semester. Oral presentations will be worth 35% of the final grade, participation in discussions 15% and the final term paper 50%.
