New Fall Courses

The music department is offering several new courses this semester covering a variety of topics taught by new and visiting music professors, including a course at the Cogut Center for Humanities. These classes blur the boundaries between computer music, ethnomusicology and pop culture.

Fall 2015 Auditions and Theory Exams

Placement in many music courses, the Applied Music Program, and performance ensembles is determined by audition during the first week of classes each semester. MUSC 0400 (Introduction to Music Theory) and MUSC 0550 (Theory of Tonal Music) require placement exams administered at the first class meeting. Students interested in testing out of MUSC 0550 must take this placement test, which is administered only at the beginning of the fall semester.

Matthew Jaroszewicz '12 co-founds Apotheosis Opera company in NYC

While studying conducting at Mannes College the New School for Music, Matthew Jaroszewicz '12 has been involved in bringing opera to new listeners with fellow Brown musician Zach Blumenstein. Their efforts attracted the attention of culture reporter Michael Cooper, who praised their ambitious project in his New York Times piece.

Joshua Tucker appointed Dean's Assistant Professor of Music

On July 1, 2015, Professor Joshua Tucker was appointed the Dean’s Assistant Professor of Music “in recognition of [his] accomplishments as a scholar and teacher.” This named professorship is a distinguishing honor, and Professor Tucker’s work in the Music Department as a teacher, advisor, and researcher certainly reflects his merits.

Brown University’s 247th Commencement on May 24th, 2015 was decorated with the sounds of celebration: echoes of amplified speeches, waves of applause, shouts of congratulations, and of course the traditional chorus of the Brown Alma Mater. This year, however, the original song was followed by a new commission, the bluesy R&B Brown Alma Mater 250, composed by Music Department Chair Butch Rovan. The surprise performance closed the university’s 250th anniversary celebration with one last melodious firework of energy and cheer.
