Brown Sacred Harp hosts All-Day Sing

All-Day Singing at Providence Friends Meeting House:

On Saturday, April 18, 2015 the Brown Sacred Harp Singers and other organizers from the Rhode Island singing community joined forces to host the 12th annual Rhode Island All-Day Sacred Harp Singing. Over 120 singers from around the country participated in a full day of high-energy singing from the American shape-note tune book The Sacred Harp (first published in 1844).

New Music Faculty Members Announced

The Brown University Department of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Assistant Professors in Composition and Theory. Wang Lu (DMA Columbia 2012) and Eric Nathan (DMA Cornell 2012) will officially join the department July 1, 2015 and begin teaching in the department this coming fall. Prof. Wang Lu and Prof. Nathan both share expertise in acoustic composition, electro-acoustic composition, and theory and analysis. They join Brown with an impressive track record of commissions and honors, including two Guggenheims and one Rome Prize.

Bryn Bliska Wins Prestigious Jazz Composer Award

Bryn Bliska:

ASCAP recently announced that Bryn Bliska '14 is a recipient of the 2015 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award.  While at Brown, Bryn received the Buxtehude Premium (2013), was co-winner of the Brand Music Premium (2014), and was a three-time recipient of the Mitchell Baker '90 Music Scholar Competition for excellence in Jazz Performance. As pianist for the Jazz Band, Bryn performed on numerous concerts throughout her years at Brown, including accompanying the band on tour.

Barry Harris Residency April 7 through 10

Barry Harris:

Internationally renowned jazz pianist, composer and teacher BARRY HARRIS will be at the Brown University Department of Music for a four day residency. Events include Jazz Workshops, Drop-In Hours with Barry Harris, a Jazz Jam, and a Jazz Transcription and Analysis class. The residency concludes with the Barry Harris Trio performing with the Brown University Jazz Band and the Brown University Chorus for the 17th Annual Daniel Milano '93 Memorial Jazz Band Concert.
