This project aims to address the place of the wheelchair, as well as other prostheses designed for the disabled, in 20th and 21st century America. Its primary focus is not to examine the physical nature of the wheelchair itself, but to analyze the social and physical effects of the introduction of the notion of prostheses. Please take note of two points before entering the project page: one, that this project will not be able to address every element of its stated objective in full, and will be added to in the future. Two, my use of the words “disabled,” “handicapped,” and “invalid” all refer to persons with physical, not mental, incapacities. Thank you.
