This Westernization includes adoption of a great deal of industrial technology and the gradual assimilation of Western literature and thought. It can be seen in Japan's rising economic power from the 1870's through the present day and in the growing military strength which brings it victory over China in 1895 and Russia in 1905, but ultimately falters against the allies in 1945. But it can also be seen in much more everyday, commonplace ways.

New phrases and words abound, as foreign sounds are reconstructed for Japanese tongues. New clothing, new dances, as the abolished samurai class gives way to the moga, or modern girl, or modan gaaru, of the 1920's - Japan's flappers. New spaces, as traditional Japanese rooms become gradually supplanted by Western style rooms without tatami mats and - crucially - full of furniture. With that furniture comes a new behavioral norm, as sitting on the floor gives ground to sitting on chairs.
