The average Ouija ritual begins with each participant calmly breathing in and out. They are asked by a mediator, or spokesperson, to believe they are breathing in a soft, positive, white light or protection and to spread it throughout the circle of participants. When the group is ready the mediator simply asks "Is there anybody there?" until the planchette begins to move. (Cornelius, 43)
In more complicated rituals chants, prayers, and actions are part of the procedures. According to Aliester Crowley, the mediator must chant "holy words" while creating a circle around the Ouija participants that they imagine as a burning fire. The ceremony must conclude with all participants reciting precise literature, a sword must be wiped clean with a rag, and a bell must be rung three times. (Cornelius, 82)
