By the 1940's the Ouija board was on a new turn of sales. Sales of the Ouija board proliferated during times of war and uncertainty. During World War II families made concessions to unseen powers and looked toward Ouija for news of loved ones or to reach out to those who had died. In 1944, the New York Times reported that a single New York department store had sold fifty thousand Ouija boards in a 5 month period. However, after the end of the war sales began to decline and the Baltimore Talking Board Company decided they need to sell the company. (Horrowitz, 73)
