Jerónimo Valera, Comentarii ac quaestiones in vniuersam Aristotelis. Lima, 1610.

Peruvian intellectual life included scholastic commentaries as well as natural observation. This work by Franciscan Jerónimo Valera is the first philosophical work by an American-born author. It is a discussion of Duns Scotus’s 13th-century scholastic commentaries on Aristotle. Valera was a mestizo, born of a Spaniard and an indigenous woman, and as such his religious career was exceptional. He rose in the Franciscan order, and even served as its provincial on one occasion. Scotus’s philosophy was very influential to the Franciscans in the New World, helping shape the thinking of Bernardino de Sahagún and others.
