Staff Spotlight: Heather Aliotta

Describe briefly what you do and how long have you been at Brown:
I am a Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Education Coordinator at Health Services. I joined the team at Health Services almost three years ago. However I arrived at Brown in 1989 as an undergraduate. After I graduated in 1993, I came back for a few reunions but it is great to be back in this new capacity.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
Being a health care provider trained to care for a patient in a holistic way resonated with me from day one. I took advantage of the open curriculum at Brown and graduated with a comprehensive transcript but not all the basic science requirements to apply to Medical School. I would not trade the experience of studying art history, comparative religion or sociology. Although it took longer due to finishing post grad science coursework, when I arrived at my graduate program in Nursing I was really ready to be there. My training prepared me to work in an office based practice with a breast surgeon, in the ER of Women & Infants Hospital and now providing primary care to our students.

Name something about you most people don't know.
I worked in the mutual fund industry after graduation from Brown. Skills learned there still serve me well! Managing people's money is surprisingly similar to helping them live a healthier life.

If you weren't doing this job, what would you be doing?
Great question! I joke sometimes about working as a florist- bringing people joy and surrounding yourself with beauty sounds great!
