Staff Spotlight: Maria Duarte

Describe how long you have been at Brown and some of your responsibilities:
I've been an Executive Assistant at the Office of Residential Life for the past 17 years. During my career at Brown, I've had the pleasure of serving as an assistant to many different positions such as the Associate Vice President for Campus Life & Student Services, Residential Life Directors, Associate Directors, Senior Associate Directors, and Assistant Directors. Some of the my responsibilities have included managing the Faculty Hospitality Program, maintaining the Associate Vice President's Discretionary budget, managing the Commencement/Reunion Housing Reservation System, assisting the Brown Faculty Fellows, and serving as central liaison between the Offices of Residential Life, Dining Services and Auxiliary Housing. Perhaps one of my most enjoyable assignments during my tenure here at Brown was getting the opportunity to manage and supervise an average of 12 Student Assistants each year.

What are some of your favorite memories of working at Brown?
My best memories at Brown were always created during Commencement/Reunion weekend when many of my Student Assistants would come back and tell me all about their wonderful lives and accomplishments.

What are you most looking forward to in your retirement?
I'm looking forward to spending more time with my family, creating new memories with my four beautiful grandchildren, not having to wake up to the alarm clock, spending more time in the garden, volunteering at the Seekonk Human Services & Council on Aging and to continue to volunteer with the Seekonk Save A Pet Society, an organization I have been a part of for over 28 years.

Name something about you most people don't know:
I love spending time outside enjoying nature. My favorites are gardening, foraging for mushrooms, or just knitting by the ocean.
