Staff Spotlight: Tanya Purdy

Describe briefly what you do and how long you have been at Brown.
I am the Director of BWell Health Promotion and I’ve been at Brown for just about 5 years. Along with the amazing BWell team of staff and students I work to empower, prevent and respond to health and wellbeing needs through community and individual interventions.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
Honestly, I am really proud of it all. I am a first gen college student from a low-income family and in so many ways, including professionally, my life today is something I thought was beyond my grasp. I am honored and proud to have a career where I center the health and wellbeing of college students.

What work projects most excite you?
Right now I am most excited our new Wellness Peer Ed program and our work to train the campus community on carrying and using Naloxone to prevent overdose death.

What are your home office must-haves?
I can’t do the home office thing anymore and am so excited to be back at work on campus!

Can you recommend a book that is important to you?
So so many books…let’s go with Just Kids by Patti Smith.

Name something about you most people don't know.
I am an open book…but just in case folks don’t know…I am a total plant and cat lady, I play drums and am an embroidery artist, and am extremely passionate about reproductive justice.

If you weren't doing this job, what would you be doing?
First, I would audition to join the Muppet band Electric Mayhem. Second, I would work with the faculty of Hogwarts to overthrow the founder for being transphobic and then I would interview to teach herbology.
