Description

The Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Brown University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Mitonuclear Genetics of Complex Traits in Drosophila at Brown University.

A postdoc position is available to work on the genetic and evolutionary aspects of nuclear-mitochondrial interactions in the laboratory of David Rand and Brown University.  The goals of this NIH funded project are to study the epistatic interactions among nuclear and mitochondrial genotypes that modulate fitness, physiological and biochemical traits in Drosophila. Mitochondrial genotypes from different strains and species of the melanogaster subgroup are placed on various nuclear chromosomal genetic backgrounds to dissect the genetic basis of life history traits. The project involves quantitative genetic analyses of Drosophila strains, genetic mapping experiments, genomic and transcriptomic analyses and inferences from population genetics, development, and evolution.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed their PhD before starting the position, and have a strong record of accomplishment from their dissertation work.  Applicants should have some combination of experience with Drosophila genetics, quantitative genetics, biochemical assays, computational analysis, and an interest in evolution or genetics.  The appointment is open for up to 3 years, and successful candidates will receive guidance in the preparation of an NIH NRSA Fellowship to pursue related projects.

Application Instructions

The position is available now and applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.  To apply please submit 1) a CV, 2) a short statement of research interests and experience, including a paragraph on how your previous experience makes you well qualified for this position, and 3) contact information for three references via Interfolio. Brown University is an EEO/AA employer and encourages applications from minorities and women. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed.

The Department Ecology, Evolution & Organismal Biology at Brown is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our teaching, mentoring, research, and departmental activities. The EEOB community shares a passion for understanding how organisms function, how they interact with their environments, and how the mechanisms that sustain these processes have evolved over time. We are a diverse community of scholars, educators, and students united in our commitment to an inclusive environment and a vibrant future that enables all facets of our society to contribute to a scientific enterprise that broadens understanding of the natural world. This is grounded in our knowledge that the best science requires an inclusive environment, and that long-standing biases exist in STEM that negatively impact members of our community and science as a whole. Thus, we strive to be a community in which a diverse set of thoughts, perspectives, and experiences are valued such that all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, or ability to feel that they are welcome here and belong here. We are a community committed to educating ourselves, to learning about and from each other, and to openly discussing biases, barriers, and inequities that some of us may face, while committing ourselves to recognizing and eliminating them. We bring this commitment to our research laboratories, our classrooms, our meetings, and our social events. We are further committed to accepting feedback, learning from our mistakes, and working to improve. We are also committed to actively combating racism and racist practices. We are thus dedicated to advocating for and bringing about institutional change, and serving as a role model for the rest of the university and for other departments of ecology, evolution, and organismal biology around the world.
