Greetings! We are delighted you are interested in applying to the graduate program in History at Brown University. The application deadline for the PhD Program in History is December 15th of each year. As of November 2018, the History Department is no longer accepting applications for the terminal MA.
Click here for the Graduate School's informational page about the history PhD program, which includes a link to to the Brown Graduate School application. Since all graduate applications go through the Graduate School, this page will also provide information about the admissions process and required application components.
*Please note: the GRE is not required for application or admission to the Department of History PhD program.
Potential applicants are first encouraged to look at our FAQ page, which addresses many common application questions. In addition, we encourage applicants to look closely at our faculty and the list of fields in which we train graduate students, contact potential advisors directly to discuss research interests and resources at Brown, and to look at what our current graduate students are working on. Feel free to contact the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), Professor Linford Fisher, for additional questions about the application components or other details of our graduate programs.
Students who wish to apply to the 5th year MA program for Brown undergraduates should see the information here and speak with the DGS. Applications will be reviewed beginning January 15, 2021 and conclude at commencement. Applications received by the January 15 deadline are given closer consideration. Open Graduate Education applications for the History MA are made through the Graduate School, and are due the second Friday in February. Prior consultation with the DGS in History and the student's home department is required.
We look forward to receiving your application!
