Environmental History in China

Brian Lander

Current environmental problems in China and elsewhere have much deeper roots than is usually imagined, says historian Brian Lander.

While China’s current environmental problems are well known, there were already 60 million people in China two millennia ago, and the natural ecosystems of its river valleys had long since been replaced with farmland. Lander's research employs archaeology, paleoecology and ancient documents to understand the long-term environmental history of China.
