Brown Jazz Band Performs at Tempelhof

During a Spring Break trip to Berlin, the Brown University Jazz Band performed twice at Tempelhof Airport, now home to approximately 7,000 refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. The idea was first suggested by Michael Steinberg, Brown’s vice provost for the arts and president-elect of the American Academy in Berlin, but Matthew McGarell, Director of the Brown Jazz Band, and the member of the Jazz Band made it their priority during the trip.

Keeping up with Alumni:  Benjamin R. Teitelbaum Ph.D. '13

Benjamin R. Teitelbaum Ph.D. ‘13:


In December, an alumnus of the Ethnomusicology program of the Music Department, Benjamin R. Teitelbaum Ph.D. ‘13, was awarded the 2015 Richard Waterman Junior Scholar Prize. He was given the award for his investigation into the music of a female white power singer from Sweden named Saga.

Brown Alumni Create "Apotheosis Opera"

“There is no feeling in the world that is more incredible than being on the podium, especially for an opera,” says Matthew Jenkins Jaroszewicz ‘12. His evident passion for conducting inspired him to create an opera company, Apotheosis Opera, with fellow Brown graduate, Zach Blumenstein ‘15.

Keeping up with Alumni:  Bryn Bliska '14

Bryn Bliska:

On February 5th 2015, Bryn Bliska ’14 was awarded the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award. She received the award for a composition she recorded as part of a post-graduation project with a fellow Brown graduate, Jamie Fried ’14. The two alumni recorded an independent album with gear mostly borrowed from friends and family in Fried’s grandparents’ house in Vermont. Bliska reinvested the cash prize from the Herb Alpert Award toward obtaining new equipment for future projects .
