Professor Stavroula Chrysanthopoulou Named Director of Master's Graduate Program

The Department of Biostatistics is very pleased to announce that Stavroula Chrysanthopoulou, Assistant Professor of Biostatistics, has agreed to accept the role of the Graduate Program Director of the Biostatistics Master's Graduate Program for the remainder of this academic year. Professor Chrysanthopoulou, who is also an alumnus of the Department, receiving her PhD in 2014, has acted in the capacity of Associate Director of the Master's Program for the past three years. During this time, she developed and initiated the successful Master's Journal Club and Career Development Series.

Biostatistics Welcomes Newest Faculty – Alice J. Paul, PhD

The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to welcome our newest faculty member, Alice J. Paul, PhD. Paul was appointed as Assistant Professor of Biostatistics in the Teaching Track, effective 1 August 2020.

Congratulations to Dr. Joseph Hogan, the Carole and Lawrence Sirovich Professor of Public Health and Professor of Biostatistics here at Brown’s School of Public Health, on the recent recognition from his alma mater, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, with the 2020 Lagakos Distinguished Alumni Award.

Congratulations to our Biostatistics Public Health Research Poster Award Recipients

Each year, Brown University’s School of Public Health holds its Public Health Research Day in April. This event showcases close to 100 School of Public Health students from Undergraduates, Master’s and Doctoral students and candidates as well as Post Docs to display and discuss the research in which they participate. This year, as with many events, the 2020 School of Public Health Research Day was held remotely.

Gutman Recognized with Dean's 2020 Excellence in Research Collaboration Award

During this year’s National Public Health Week, Professor Roee Gutman was recognized by Brown University’s School of Public Health with the 2020 Dean’s Award in Excellence in Research Collaboration. Professor Gutman joined Brown’s Department of Biostatistics in 2011 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018. Professor Gutman is a vibrant member of the Department faculty and is the Director of the Department’s Undergraduate Statistics Concentration.

Brown Biostatistics Welcomes Roberta De Vito, PhD

Chair of Biostatistics Christopher Schmid provides commentary on technology that allows individuals to do their own studies in collaboration with their physicians.

A growing number of researchers are finding meaningful, impactful results through “N of 1” studies in which scientific discoveries are being made for “one person at a time” to enhance personalized medical care, nutritional planning, identification of beneficial exercise routines and much more! Among the various examples identified through a recent article in Knowable Magazine, the article referenced a 2018 study involving Schmid along with Dr. Richard Kravitz of the University of California, Davis, and their other collaborators.

Lorin Crawford, PhD, named in The Root 100 2019

Congratulations to Professor Lorin Crawford who has been named by The Root among the 100 most influential and prominent members of the African American community! Professor Crawford is being recognized as “an up-and-coming researcher…. developing statistical models to help scientists better understand genetic disorders.”

Faculty and Alumni Honored at 2019 JSM in Colorado

At this year’s Joint Statistical Meeting (JSM), the American Statistical Association announced a Biometrics Jounal paper for the 2019 Outstanding Statistical Application Award. The winning paper was authored by Assistant Professor Liangyuan Hu, PhD’16 (Alumni), Professor Joseph W. Hogan (Faculty), Adjunct Assistant Professor and Moi University Instructor Ann W. Mwangi, PhD’11 (Alumni and Adjunct Faculty member), and Abraham Siika (Moi University).
