Ruoshui Zhai Receives Travel Award

Third-year doctoral candidate, Ruoshui Zhai, received a travel award to attend the Medical College of Wisconsin’s 2017 BiostatMCW conference next week in Milwaukee.  The award, which was open to “outstanding PhD students and new researchers (within 5 years of PhD)” recognizes Zhai’s work with Assistant Professor of Biostatistics, Roee Gutman, and is entitled “Optimal Sample Size for Cluster Randomized Trials Based on the Randomization Distribution.” Zhai's presentation will outline a novel simulation-based approach to calculated sample size for cluster randomizatio

Honoring Professor Constantine Gatsonis

The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to announce a special symposium on Scientific Inference in the Age of Data Science to honor the fundamental and singular contributions of Professor Constantine Gatsonis to the development of biostatistics at Brown University. The program will feature brief talks from three leaders in statistics and data science, and ample opportunity for Q & A from the audience.  Provost Rick Locke, School of Public Health Dean Fox Wetle, and Professor Vince Mor will deliver opening remarks.

Faculty Award - Jon Steingrimsson, PhD

Over the summer, one of our newest faculty members, Dr. Jon Steingrimsson, gave an invited talk, entitled “Censoring Unbiased Survival Forests” at the 2017 Lifetime and Data Analysis Conference hosted by the University of Connecticut.  At the conference, Steingrimsson was awarded “Best Paper” for his work entitled “Censoring Unbiased Regression Trees and Ensembles”.

Brown Biostatistics Welcomes 24 Incoming Graduate Students

Last week, the Department of Biostatistics joined the Departments of Epidemiology, Behavioral Health Sciences and Health Services Policies & Practices as well as the Master’s Program in Public Health, as we welcomed over 100 students to Brown’s School of Public Health.  Biostatistics welcomed its largest class, to date, with 5 new doctoral students and 19 Master’s students.

Professor Schmid President Elect of SRSM

Biostatistics Professor Christopher Schmid has been named President-Elect for the Society for Research Synthesis Methods (SRSM) for 2018.  He will become President of SRSM in 2019.  In addition to his faculty position with the Department of Biostatistics, Schmid is the Co-Director of Brown’s Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health and directs the Clinical Study Design, Epidemiology and Biostatistics
