What is the BrownConnect Summer Institute (BCSI)?
The BrownConnect Summer Institute (BCSI) is a free seven-week, virtual summer program for Brown students beginning June 8, 2020. The program was created with the knowledge that experiential learning opportunities will be more limited for students this summer. The goal of the BCSI is to provide students with a meaningful, immersive, and educational experience allowing them to both engage with and learn from a diverse group of Brown alumni, parents, faculty and staff.
The program consists of two modules and is designed with the flexibility to allow students to participate in the BCSI alongside remote internships or summer jobs. In order to fully participate in all segments of the BCSI, we anticipate that students will devote approximately 25 hours per week. In the first module, students may choose to participate selectively if they are balancing other internships or work. Most BCSI Case Studies, Skills Workshops and Industry Expert Conversations will be recorded so that students unable to participate in real time can view these segments at their convenience.
Module 1: (June 8-25th Monday-Thursday)
During the first module, students will participate in a virtual Case Study each morning from 10:30am-12:30pm ET. The Case Studies are hosted by a Brown alumni or parent and will begin with a one-hour lecture followed by a one-hour group discussion. Students will have the opportunity to submit reflection papers on the Case Study discussion. Speakers, topics and readings will be posted in advance for each selected Case Study. Students can select a Case Study each day from one of five broad career tracks:
- Entrepreneurship & Technology
- Science & Healthcare
- Business & Consulting
- Communications & Creativity
- Non-Profit & Public Service
Afternoon sessions for all students will consist of one 90-minute online Skills Workshop from 1:30-3:00pm ET led by a Brown alumni, parent, faculty or staff member on topics such as research, persuasive communication, financial literacy, excel and powerpoint skills, life design, and effective networking.
Each day will conclude with a 90-minute virtual Conversation from 3:30-5:00pm with an Industry Expert, a Brown alumni or parent from a variety of fields. These speakers will include: Daveed Diggs, Grammy & Tony Award winning Actor; Janet Yellen, former Federal Reserve Chair; James Patterson, the world's best-selling Author; Jim Yong Kim, former President of the World Bank; and Chris Berman, ESPN sportscaster.
Module 2: (Begins in July & Lasts 3 Weeks)
During the second BCSI module, interested students will have the opportunity to participate in a short-term individual or group project, mentored by an alumni or parent Project Leader. Sample projects may include:
- Creating a proposal for a start-up
- Designing a scientific research study
- Suggesting a novel political or business strategy
- Proposing an idea for a pilot, movie or book
- Researching a problem, issue or idea
- Performing data analysis to solve a problem
- Creating a social media presence for a small business
- Analyzing the Covid-19 impact on a particular industry or segment of society
Module 2 will begin in July and students will have approximately 3 weeks to complete their selected project. Further details about the project-based portion of the BCSI will be available in June.
