Affirming Support For Trans Community Members at Brown

Dear Community Members,

On February 24th the United States Department of Justice and Department of Education withdrew previous guidance on the protection of transgender students in schools and recently we found out that the Supreme Court has decided not to hear Gavin Grimm’s case on Transgender Rights within schools.   These developments have raised many questions about what this means for the Brown Community.

We are writing to affirm that our policies and our support for trans community members at Brown have not changed.  In keeping with our non-discrimination policy and our commitment to inclusion, all Brown community members and visitors to campus are free to use the restroom that is consistent with their gender identity.  In addition, there are many gender inclusive restrooms on campus for those who feel most comfortable using those facilities.  You can find a list here, which is being updated regularly as we continue to add gender inclusive restrooms across campus. For information on federal policy changes, The National Center for Transgender Equality had produced a helpful FAQ on the Withdrawal of Federal Guidance for Transgender Students.

We recognize that even with these policies in place you may be experiencing uncertainty, anxiety and/or fear.  The LGBTQ Center and our many partners on campus are here to walk beside you and provide support.  While these support systems are always in place, we want to emphasize that with many political changes happening quickly we are aware that these new developments may be causing additional stress. Please do not hesitate to seek us out.

As we continue to move through uncertain times, as many of our rights are being challenged, I encourage members of the Brown community to think about how we can support each other through active ally-ship.  We believe it is possible to continue to improve our own campus climate while also having an impact beyond Brown.  Let us all work together as a community to continue to make Brown a supportive and welcoming place for everyone.

Sincerely,

Kelly Garrett
