Faculty Development Programs
Faculty Development Programs seek to provide fair and transparent access to resources that support career success at Brown University and the wider scientific community. These resources include a formal mechanism for pretenure faculty to connect with a mentor outside of their own department as well as peer-mentoring groups that provide a circle of advisors to STEM women faculty. Our grants librarian works with faculty to identify funding opportunities and provides sponsored project support. In addition, we continue to work with offices across campus to make visible and accessible work-family policies regarding the availability of daycare, tenure-clock extension, and dual career protocol.   green

Faculty Outreach and Networking Events (FONE)
FONE is held on the third Thursday of each month from 4:00-6:00 PM. Each session will begin with a brief presentation on one of a range of faculty development topics (sponsored project support, leadership development, work/family balance, etc.) followed by an opportunity to network with Brown colleagues.

Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program offers faculty members two options for participation, a Faculty Mentoring Program and Peer Mentoring Groups.

The Faculty Mentoring Program is a collaborative effort of the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, the Office of the Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences, and the ADVANCE Program. It provides a formal mechanism for tenure-track faculty to connect with a mentor outside of their own department, with whom they can speak candidly about their experiences. Mentors will help the faculty member learn to negotiate the academic environment at Brown by providing information about university policies, culture, and resources.

The Peer Mentoring Groups is an ADVANCE at Brown initiative for both female and male faculty in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) beginning Fall 2008. Ideally tenure-track faculty members cultivate a circle of advisors, which includes senior faculty members at Brown and in their fields, and peers with whom there may be less risk in discussing experiences within Brown academic departments.

Sponsored Project Support
The Funding Resources Specialist provides assistance for faculty engaged in sponsored funding. The underlying goal of this initiative is to increase external research funding for faculty, thus promoting their success at Brown as well as within their own scientific discipline. See our Sponsored Project Support wiki for information on grants, funding resources and databases, and university support.

Work-Family Balance

Primary information about University resources in the area of work-family balance are available through the Dean of the Faculty's Family-Friendly Policies at Brown University website. Additionally, ADVANCE maintains the following resource pages:

  • Dependent Care includes Brown University policies, local child care and school resources, funding support for faculty, and resources for academic leadership & policy makers.
  • Dual Career includes extensive local employment information as well as resources for academic leadership and policy makers.
