Marcela studies the role of media in the rise of Brazilian Pentecostalism and its effects on values and behaviors promoted by the church. She has also researched how free childcare affected mother's labor outcomes in Sao Paulo, how mothers' work is affected by child disability in the context of the Zika virus epidemic, and how conservative, evangelical mayors influence sexual education in schools and consequently teenage pregnancy.
