The excavation branch of the Vorotan Project has focused on three major sites within our proejct area. Site 1 - Shaghat, Site 6 - Balak , and Site 21 - Uitz . At Shaghat, our team opened a total of 6 trenchs in the 2005 season, two of which were re-opened in the 2006 season for further work. At the site of Balak, across the valley from Shaghat, one trench was opened in the 2005 season. At Uitz, work began in the 2006 season, during which time the team opened three trenches.

The trenches excavated have supplied stratified deposits that are well-dateable (primarily through C-14 analysis in conjunctin with Sturt Manning and Oxford Lab), spanning the periods from the Middle Bronze Age, through Iron Age and up to Medieaval periods. The objects recovered include massive quantities of pottery, obsidian, bone, charcoal, mudbrick, and stone.
