The obsidian studies branch of the Vorotan Project is under the direction of John Cherry, with Elissa Faro. We have received invaluable help from Armenian archaeologist Ruben Badalyan and Armenian geologist Sergei Karapetian. During the 2005 season, obsidian work focused on the study and analysis of artifactual finds from excavation and survey.
In the 2006 season, we continued our study of excavated artifactual obsidian, and expanded our study to include visits to the 4 major Sevkar sources of obsidian to take samples for neutron activation analysis (with Dr. Leah Minc, Oregon State University). We also studied the availability of obsidian as a raw material along the course of the Vorotan River.
At the 2007 Annual Meetings of the Archaeological Institute of America, a poster entitled "Obsidian Studies in Southern Armenia: Work by the Vorotan Project in 2005-06" was presented by John Cherry, Elissa Faro and Ruben Badalyan.
