Comedy in Arabic Literature
0811R [CRN: 23887]Modern Arabic literature is often thought of as a literature of resistance, defined by its relation to a history of conflict. But there is an equally deep tradition in Arabic with its roots in the comic, the grotesque, and the absurd. This course will serve as an introduction to ancient and contemporary theories of comedy, as well as an investigation of comic texts and films in Arabic. We will pay special attention to the relations between the Russian and Arabic comic traditions. With readings by Gogol, Bakhtin, al-Hakim, Habibi, Cossery, and others.
