Summer 2023 Highlights from the IHI

In June, Brown Associate Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences Dr. Abigail Harrison traveled to Obafemi Awolowo University in western Nigeria as a visiting scholar and international mentor for the CARTA Shine Project. The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) Shine Project aims to investigate and increase transparency surrounding the culture around sexual harassment in first generation federal universities in Southwestern Nigeria. Brown Health Service Research Doctoral Program Director, Omar Galarraga, was the Lead Rapporteur for the Implementation Science, Economics & Health Systems track at the 12th International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference on HIV Science in Brisbane, Australia. Emily O’Neill, PharmD, PhD Candidate ‘24 in the Department of Health Services Research, presented her doctoral research at the 2023 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting in Seattle, WA. Her poster, A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of the Anticoagulants Rivaroxaban and Warfarin for the Management of Venous Thromboembolisms in Western Kenya, was one of 21 nominated for the 2023 Best Poster Award at ARM. IHI Program Manager, Marta Wilson-Barthes, traveled to Edoret, Kenya to meet with Investigators and Research Staff of the Harambee Cluster Randomized Trial. Now in its fifth and final year, the NIMH-funded study is evaluating the effects of providing integrated community-based care within community microfinance groups on HIV viral suppression and retention in care. Ms. Wilson-Barthes visited health facilities in the study counties (Busia and Trans Nzoia) and met with program staff and clinical officers to discuss challenges and successes of the project, which is co-led by MPIs Omar Galarraga and Becky Genberg.
