The Project
The purpose of this project was to begin to explore the various means through which the pub experience might be represented in a digital format. This focus addresses such questions as:
- How might one make someone 'understand' what it is like to visit a certain pub without ever going there?
- What role do the different components of a pub experience have in the maintenance of a proper atmosphere? Does history play a role as well?
- How necessary is context for understanding the material culture of pubs? How might detailed examinations breaking down the modern pub be pertinent to archaeological investigations of an earlier era?
Although the media currently being used in this project are all photographic at present, they by no means represent a 'complete set' of media types or representations of the pub experience. Yet this Virtual Pub is a work in constant reexamination - this project is never closed.
Wickenden Pub
Wickenden Pub, Providence, RI was chosen as the subject of this study because, well, it was a pub, and it had a certain amount of history and atmosphere that made it appear an interesting prospect.
