Committee Structure and Responsibility
The Data Governance Committee and Data Governance Advisory Group, convened by senior leadership, are comprised of faculty and of senior representatives of major academic and administrative units. The work of the committees helps direct the management of university data, protecting its integrity, accuracy and distribution. The committees promote the guiding principles of data governance, support the stewardship roles and responsibilities and, when needed, help resolve conflict and confusion around data ownership and accountability. Additionally, the groups communicate and educate the community on best practices.
Data Governance Committee
This committee meets approximately 6 times a year and has the role of reviewing, sharing, and promoting consistent and effective administrative data policies and best practices. This committee helps establish general guidelines and policies for data usage and access. The Committee also develops and oversees a process for handling requests for exceptions to these policies.

Data Governance Advisory Group
This committee meets 2 to 3 times during the academic year. It helps to set strategic priorities for data management and access on campus and provides stewardship of the guiding principles of data governance in their areas. The committee reviews proposed data governance roles across Brown and/or within specific systems. This group promotes the importance of the principles of data governance in their areas of responsibility, including access, consistency, and security. When needed, the group resolves conflict and confusion around data ownership and accountability.
